There’s no doubt that even fully vaccinated people will become infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, but boosters will help protect them more – and the real risk is being unvaccinated, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday.
“There will be breakthrough infections, no doubt about that,” Fauci told CNN. “We know that from the emerging experience we are getting from people in South Africa and particularly in the UK. And we will be seeing that in this country.”
Lab evidence indicates that boosters will protect people, however, said Fauci, who is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
“The vulnerable people are the people who have not been vaccinated, and I hope that the possibility that we're seeing -- that we're going to be getting a surge of Omicron, which is almost inevitable given its characteristic of high degree of transmissibility,” Fauci added. “We have the tools to be able to blunt this. We just need to implement them.”
The Delta variant is causing the real trouble now, however, Fauci noted.
