Oversized eyeglasses greet guests at The Study at University City, a new boutique hotel in Philadelphia. The sculpture represents the moment when readers finally put their glasses down and nod off after reading a great book, says hotelier Paul McGowan.

The new hotel, which opened in January, sits on land leased from Drexel University and is within easy reach of the University of Pennsylvania. The Study hotel brand creates relationships with college campuses and customizes spaces to reflect the schools.

The Philadelphia property is the second Study Hotel. Housed in a boxy building with a slate brick and split-face granite exterior, The Study at University City sits at the corner of 33rd and Chestnut streets.

A spare Nordic aesthetic defines the hotel, which puts an emphasis on desks and study areas to underline the collegiate concept. The Study in Philadelphia has 212 guest rooms.

Room rates start in the mid-$200s. Study creator McGowan was inspired to launch the brand after visiting colleges with his daughter. He saw a need for boutique properties with personalities that reflect nearby campuses.

The attached CO-OP restaurant and lounge is delicately divided by a locally sourced sculptural element. This wispy, reed-like partition was created by a Philadelphia blacksmith.

McGowan and the designers put a lot of thought into the hotel's spaces, creating "an environment for guests that is not only comfortable but energetic enough that you feel like you're being infused with some sort of positive energy."
