The Silo Hotel: Once a grain-silo complex, the industrial monolith has been transformed into Cape Town's most expensive hotel as well as a soon-to-open world-class art museum.

A new Cape Town landmark: Architect Thomas Heatherwick spearheaded the exterior revamp, preserving the heritage building's original appearance with showstopping geodesic convex windows.

Contrasting interior: As a counterpoint to the industrial exterior, the inside is a riot of color, pattern and glamor, with 28 individually designed rooms stocked with vibrant custom furnishings, oversized chandeliers and feature artworks.

Signature look: Each of the 28 rooms has the eccentric but elegant signature look of hotelier Liz Biden, who is also behind the Royal Portfolio hotel collection.

Lively and welcoming: "I have tried to contrast the stark exterior of the building with warm colors, vibrant fabrics, exciting ornaments, and contemporary art to create a lively and welcoming space," says Biden.

Former life: The nearly 200-feet-high silo building, completed in 1924, once held the title as sub-Saharan Africa's tallest building. It had been South Africa's premier grain silo, where all of the country's small farmers' yields were deposited for export, until it closed in 2001.

Other facilities: For non-hotel guests, the two restaurants -- the Willaston Bar and Granary Cafe -- as well as the rooftop lounge/bar and swimming pool are attractions in their own right.
