1. Auckland, New Zealand: Auckland has come out on top on The Economist Intelligence Unit's annual Global Liveability Index of 140 cities around the world.

2. Osaka, Japan: One of two Japanese cities in the top 10, Osaka ranked in second place on the list, which considers factors spanning five categories, stability (25%), healthcare (20%), culture and environment (25%), education (10%), and infrastructure (20%).

3. Adelaide, Australia: This city, which was 10th on the 2019 list, rose up to third position. Australian cities did particularly well on the list this time round due to the tough border controls in place, which have allowed life to return to some semblance of normal much faster.

4. Wellington, New Zealand: The second New Zealand city on the list, Wellington achieved an all round score of 93.7%, tying in fourth place with Japan's capital.

4. Tokyo, Japan: Tokyo has also jumped up the list, moving from seventh place to joint fourth. As the index was not published in 2020 due to Covid, there's a two year gap between the rankings.

6. Perth, Australia: Australia's fourth-most populous city ranked in sixth place in the annual list.

7. Zurich, Switzerland: This Swiss city has climbed from 11th to seventh place on the list of the most livable cities in the world.

8. Geneva, Switzerland: While many Europe cities ranked lower this year, Switzerland's Geneva, as well as Zurich, achieved higher positions. Geneva rose from 14th to joint eighth place.

8. Melbourne, Australia: Coming in at number 2 in 2019, Melbourne, which had a long run at the top of the list, tied with Geneva this time round.

10. Brisbane, Australia: The capital of Queensland rounds up the top 10 on The Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Index for 2021.
