'Lavatory Self-Portrait in the Flemish Style #12' —
Elegance in a toilet seat cover: That's what artist Nina Katchadourian found through a series of airplane lavatory self portraits. The portraits are part of her larger "Seat Assignment" project.

'Bucklehead' —
Katchadourian rarely chats with her seatmates about what she's doing, but they find their way into her work anyway. "I do feel that there's an unexplored possible future chapter to this project which is to actively engage and perhaps collaborate with my seatmate. I haven't really done that yet because I'm not really sure what I want to ask for or what my opening move is."

'Pretzel Meteor ' —
Much of Katchadourian's "Seat Assignment" work involves creating scenarios around photos from in-flight magazines.

'Topiary' —
Green peas add dimension to this garden shot. "I was flying back from Finland last summer (where I have family), and the green peas there are so delicious in summer that I had bought a bag that I ate through the whole flight back to New York."

'Sugar Fox' —
Katchadourian's adventures with sugar inspired one of only three interactions with a seatmate about her work in 101 flights dedicated to the project.

'Invisible City' —
Katchadourian uses bright sunlight to meld images from both sides of a magazine page. "Now I've started reading magazines in this strange position every time I have a window seat."

'Lavatory Self-Portrait in the Flemish Style #3' —
The "Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style" were shot almost entirely on a 2011 flight to New Zealand.

'Engine Failure' —
Imagined disaster scenarios, in this case using sweater-lint, make up a large portion of "Seat Assignment." Katchadourian stays busy in flight in part as a way to deal with the stress of travel.
