Jardine's Noonday Gun: This piece of Hong Kong history is located on the Causeway Bay waterfront.

Ready for takeoff: The gun's history dates to the British colonial era, when it was fired to celebrate the head of the Jardine Matheson company returning to the office.

Time and time again: Before everybody had synchronized smart phones, firing the gun every day at noon meant you could always re-set your watch.

Take a look: The Causeway Bay typhoon shelter is located in Victoria Harbor on the Hong Kong Island side.

Shake it up baby: Thanks to the gun's heft, the firing of the gun makes it feel a little like an earthquake on the surrounding blocks.

On the waterfront: If you want to visit the gun and the surrounding area, it's open daily between 12:00-12:30 p.m.

Marking the time: One exception to the rule is on New Year's Eve when the gun is fired at midnight.

Up close and personal: Civilians who want a chance to fire the gun themselves can make donations to a Hong Kong-based mental health charity.
