'2001: A Space Odyssey': Director Stanley Kubrick's Cult sci-fi movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" included a scene set in a Hilton space hotel.

En route: The Orbiter Hilton was a capsule capable of accommodating up to 24 guests as a stopover on the way to the moon.

Rocket pad reception: The entrance to the Lunar Hilton would be on the surface, with the rest of the structure underground.

Going underground: A series of subterranean corridors would branch out from a central hub, to connect a total of 100 rooms.

Drinks in space: "If you think we're not going to have a cocktail lounge you don't know Hilton -- or travelers," said Barron Hilton.

Moon reservation: A mockup of a room reservation for the Lunar Hilton, for arrivals no sooner than 1980.

Floor plan: The hotel's top level included the lobby and cocktail lounge.

Lunar layout: A floor plan for the guest rooms corridors.

Key to the future: Hilton mocked up a hotel key to the Lunar Hilton. It may have looked futuristic for 1967, but most hotels now use cards to open room doors.

Space similarities: The rooms were designed to be very similar to regular Hilton hotel rooms.

Route to the stars: Hilton employees spell out "Next Year Lunar Hilton" at a parade for returning astronauts in New York.
