Italian castle: South African couple Max and Joy Ulfane came across Castello di Fighine, a rundown fortress in Tuscany, nearly 30 years ago and quickly fell in love with it.

Castle owners: Max and Joy Ulfane purchased the neglected ancient fortress Castello di Fighine, which has an attached hamlet, in 1995.

Huge project: The couple spent four years renovating the neglected castle into a luxury retreat.

Complete makeover: "We've put lots of labor and love in here, facing and overcoming challenges. And lots, lots of money to bring this place back to life again," Joy Ulfane tells CNN.

Holiday home: The renovation process was far from simple, but the Ulfanes are thrilled with their beautifully restored fortress and enjoy spending time in Fighine.

Peaceful retreat: "We come here once a month from London to relax, we love the peace, tranquility and utter privacy of our castle," says Joy.
