Four riders are trekking from Athens to Kassel, Germany as part of an art piece titled "The Transit of Hermes."

Conceived by Scottish artist Ross Birrell (not pictured) for Documenta 14, the piece explores the refugee crisis and xenophobia.

Birrell will film the journey, and exhibit it as part of the exhibition.

The riders are led by Peter van der Gugten. Zsolt Szabo (seen here), David Wewetzer and Tina Boche round out the team.

In all, they will travel about 1,500 miles over 100 days. They've brought five horses.

The youngest is the titular Hermes, a six-year-old Arravani breed from the Arcadian mountains in southern Greece. In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods.
