Elle Fanning (2017) —
The red carpet at Cannes Film Festival has seen many a memorable moment over its 70-year history.

Brigitte Bardot (1953) —
The 1953 Cannes festival saw 18-year-old Brigitte Bardot's star ascend. It was thanks in part to two provocative photo ops. One took place on the beach while Bardot was wearing a bikini, and the other on the USS Midway, while she was wearing a mini dress. Though her acting career ended after her last film in 1973, Bardot's connection with the Riviera remains strong. She's lived in St. Tropez for decades.

Grace Kelly (1955) —
American actress Grace Kelly was an Academy Award-winner when she arrived at the festival in 1955. A photo opportunity with Prince Rainier III in Monaco sounded innocuous enough, and she was dating French actor Jean-Pierre Aumount at the time. But the two maintained a correspondence, and that December Prince Rainier flew to the US. Three days after meeting up with Kelly he proposed. She accepted, and were married the following April.

Tippi Hedren (1963) —
When Alfred Hitchock and Tippi Hedren came to Cannes with "The Birds," the gregarious director threatened to overshadow his star. The American actress, making her debut, had suffered what's now known to be a torturous shoot with Hitchcock. Filming the movie's climax, Hedren was told the birds would be mechanical, but instead she was attacked by live animals. Not that you'd know this when the pair arrived at Cannes, of course. The pair took part in multiple photo shoots and even released birds at the Palais.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana (1987) —
Prince Charles and Princess Diana had been married for seven years by the time they took to the red carpet at Cannes. Wearing a blue chiffon dress by Catherine Walker, the princess delighted the press when she walked up the Palais steps on May 15. Years later, the Telegraph reported an unsettling footnote to the event: According to tapes recorded in 1992 with her voice coach, Prince Charles told Diana of the death of her alleged lover Barry Mannakee, in a limousine on the way to the festival.

Madonna (1991) —
In 1991 Cannes festival featured "In Bed With Madonna," a documentary following the singer's Blond Ambition World Tour, which included cameos from many within the film world. Arriving for the gala screening, she broke all kinds of red carpet rules with a silk conical bra by Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Bjork (2000) —
Before her infamous swan dress at the 2001 Oscars, Bjork walked the carpet in a pink tulle confection by Marjan Pejoski in 2000. The Icelandic singer was on press duties for Lars Von Trier's "Dancer In The Dark," for which she won the award for best actress.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (2008) —
A heavily pregnant Angelina Jolie did the rounds in 2008 with then-partner Brad Pitt. Jolie was debuting "Kung Fu Panda" and "The Changeling." In an interview during the festival the actress revealed she was pregnant with twins, and two months later, Knox and Vivienne were born.

Nicole Kidman (2013) —
On jury duty in 2013, Nicole Kidman was required to walk the red carpet for all films in the official selection. That's a lot of dresses. The biggest hitters were outfits from the late L'Wren Scott, Chanel, Giorgio Armani and Valentino.

Julia Roberts (2016) —
In 2016 festival organizers turned women away for not wearing heels on the red carpet. Julia Roberts' rebuttal? Walk the carpet barefoot.

Kendall Jenner (2017) —
Pictured here attending the "120 Beats Per Minute" screening, Kendall Jenner tested sartorial standards when she paired her Giambattista Valli couture dress with socks and sandals. Elsewhere she went for a truly unconventional red carpet look when she attended the festival's Fashion for Relief event: denim shorts.

Bella Hadid (2017) —
Showing that the Cannes red carpet is not merely the preserve of actors. Model Bella Hadid provided one of the stand-out moments this year. Pictured here in Dior, Hadid walked the carpet multiple times in connection with Chopard's 20th anniversary as festival sponsor.

Kristen Stewart (2017) —
Cannes loves Kristen Stewart, and this year she brought her ever-evolving style to the festival once more. She conducted interviews in leather gloves and braces, and took to the red carpet in this unusual piece by Chanel.
