Beyond the Call: Sheriff's deputy sheds uniform to save lives Ohio has been particularly hard hit by the opioid crisis, and sheriff deputies in one county have come up with an innovative idea: they've shed their uniforms and their patrol cars to help addicts. Twenty officers at the Lucas County Drug Abuse Response Team visit emergency rooms to greet addicts as they come out of their overdose. Addicts are notoriously resistant to help, but the DART team has found they're much more receptive when the person they see bedside is in plain clothes and comes across as more of a buddy than an authority figure. The officers also keep up with the addicts as they try to build a new life, and when they visit them at home, it's in a regular car, not a cop car. Over the past three years, they've responded to at least 2,300 people who've overdosed, and nearly 80% have gone to detox. We accompany DART team member Charles Johnson as he rushes to ER's in the Toledo area, and as he visits recovering addicts who are trying to rebuild their lives.

Patrol officers with assistance from multiple agencies and several civilians rescued a family of four including a toddler and an infant after their boat crashed and overturned in the Indian River near the Hubert Humphrey Bridge. At 10:40 PM officers responded to the area after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the boat crash with several people in the water. Four patrol officers jumped in and began searching for the victims. A civilian in a boat nearby also assisted. The adults and the infant were quickly located but the search continued for nearly one hour for a 23-month old girl. Officers Matt Rush and Cpl. Alan Worthy found the girl trapped underneath the overturned boat staying afloat in a small pocket of air. Officer Rush and Worthy pulled the child out from under the boat and got her to paramedics for treatment. She was wearing a life jacket and is in good condition along with the rest of her family. All were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) is handling the crash investigation. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Coast Guard, and FWC assisted with the rescue.

Meet officers going beyond the call of duty

One of the victims of the suicide bombing in Bagram, Afghanistan was an NYPD detective. Please see the statement below from NYPD Commissioner William J. Bratton:

ìEarlier today, we lost one of our Finest in a suicide bombing in Bagram, Afghanistan. Detective Joseph Lemm epitomized the selflessness we can only strive for: putting his county and city first. Detective Lemm not only served New Yorkers as a member of this Department, but served his country as a member of the U.S. Air National Guard. Detective Lemm was a fifteen year veteran of the NYPD and was promoted to Detective in January of 2014, serving in the Bronx Warrant Squad. As a member of the NYPD, Detective Lemm was deployed three times, twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq. Detective Lemm leaves behind a wife and two children. Tonight, we grieve and we remember this selfless public servant who dedicated his life to protecting others.î
