Brian Ries is the senior editor of breaking news for CNN Digital, helping lead and innovate our live coverage of everything from President Trump to extreme weather. Previously, he was a senior producer on CNN's social team.
Prior to CNN, Ries built the real-time news team at Mashable. In that position, he covered breaking news for a social and mobile-first audience — from the rise of ISIS, to MH370's disappearance, and the Charleston church shooting. Ries was also previously an editor at Newsweek and The Daily Beast, where he covered technology and led the social media team.
Ries was part of CNN's social team during the 2016 presidential election, which was recognized with a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association for excellence in social media, as well as a Webby Award. He has also contributed to Webby Award-winning teams at Mashable and The Daily Beast.
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Ries graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in political science. He currently lives and works in New York.
