Alex Charalambides is Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for CNN where he oversees the technology and engineering strategy, development and implementation for all of CNN Digital’s products and platforms.
Charalambides is a seasoned industry executive with over 25 years of experience focused on developing solutions for enterprises and consumers, while building best in class engineering organizations.
Charalambides joins CNN after a successful tenure as Chief Technology Officer at Business Insider (Insider), a property of Axel Springer SE, where he helped transform a startup online editorial site into a formidable media platform competing with long standing publishers. During his time at Insider, his teams built a lightning-fast, world class experience delivering editorial content to readers, backed by a bespoke, robust and performant platform for their burgeoning subscription, syndication and affiliate businesses. Under his leadership, the tech organization grew by 160% which included a tech hub expansion in Northern Ireland.
Before Insider, Charalambides led the engineering organization at Time Inc. for the Sports Illustrated brand. He rebuilt the team, revolutionized the front-end platform and expanded his scope to oversee all digital brand technical teams including Time, Entertainment Weekly and People. Under his leadership, Time Inc. unified all 25 brands on to a singular, flexible front-end platform within a year.
After serving in the South African military, Charalambides quickly dove into his professional career with an early digital opportunity, co-founding LiveTechnology, a tech startup that launched mar-tech platforms for Fortune 500 brands. He established a headquarters in the US, expanded the company’s presence globally and rose to the role of Chief Operating Officer
He is a proud husband, father, pug-dad, woodworker and steadily improving musician.
