India’s vast scale means it lends itself to long train journeys, allowing visitors to take in a string of classic destinations while watching the country unfold in front of them.

The extensive rail network, however, can prove challenging for first time visitors and those not so keen on cramped services that often run late. Step forward the Maharajas’ Express.

This luxury service operates across five different circuits (as well as occasionally plying different routes depending on the season), with comfortable, full–sized bedrooms, a choice of high–end restaurant cars and the chance to see the best India has to offer in true style.

The Indian Panorama route starts in the capital Delhi, stopping in Jaipur for a visit to the Amber Fort, before heading to Ranthambore for a game drive in the National Park, with the opportunity to spot tigers in the wild. The circuit continues with stop-offs in Agra for the Taj Mahal and the holy city of Varanasi, where pilgrims greet the sunrise over the Ganges.

Udaipur for a luxury palace stay in Rajasthan

There’s a romance about Udaipur that few places in India can match. Set on Lake Pichola, with the Aravalli Hills dominating the skyline, the Rajasthan city is home to a series of beautiful palaces and temples, its warren–like streets full of bazaars and shops ripe for exploration.

The main attraction is the vast and imposing City Palace. Dating back to 1599, the original palace was commissioned by Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder of Udaipur. Today there are 11 palaces within its grounds, as well as the essential City Palace Museum, which forms the main part of the building. Home to spectacular artefacts and paintings, it’s the ideal way to delve into the city’s past.

The extraordinary Crystal Gallery is home to a stunning collection of crystal furniture that was ordered from England by the Maharana in 1877 and left unopened until the 1980s. Tickets to see this ostentatious array of chairs, beds and tables also include entry to Durbar Hall, a restored space which was once the haunt of the ruling Maharanas.

For those who prefer to spend their time exploring and getting lost, Udaipur’s narrow alleyways and ancient bazaars are hard to beat. Shoppers should be sure to leave enough space in their luggage for all the bargains available, from spices to traditional clothes, while photographers will have no shortage of colorful buildings and fascinating street scenes to point their cameras at.

Such cultural and retail excursions can be easily offset in Udaipur’s array of luxury hotels, which more than match the city’s opulent architecture while offering five-star service and some of the subcontinent’s best spas.

Chief among them is the Taj Lake Palace. Developed as a hill station when India was under British rule, Shimla came to prominence in 1863 when it became the Raj’s summer capital. Today, the Indian city is a year-round destination, its mix of colonial architecture and Hindu temples drawing in visitors from around the globe.

The best way to arrive is via the classic ‘toy train’ from Kalka. The line, which was built by the British in 1903 and is UNESCO–protected, passes through 103 tunnels and 20 stations on the five–hour journey up to Shimla. The views as it chugs up into the mountains are truly special, with ample opportunity for taking pictures. The good news is that those looking to indulge in a spot of luxury can take the Shivalik Deluxe Express, which doesn’t stop at all on the 60-mile route and offers at–seat meals.

After checking in at one of Shimla’s myriad luxury hotels, intrepid visitors and culture buffs won’t lack for things to do. The Gaiety Theatre is one of the city’s key attractions. Built in 1877 in honor of Queen Victoria’s 40th year on the throne and once witness to performances by Rudyard Kipling, today it has been fully restored. Visitors can watch shows from local drama societies or take a tour to delve into its past.

Clamber up to the top of Jakhoo Hill, Shimla’s highest point, for panoramic views of the surrounding villages. And be sure to brave the monkeys on the one-hour walk to Jakhu (or Jakoo) Temple, arguably Shimla’s most famous sight.

For those looking to explore the surrounding mountains and enjoy the fresh air, a trek through the forest of the Pabbar Valley is ideal. There are epic views up into the Himalayas, with the chance to hire a guide and take off for a longer trip if the bustle of the town is getting too much.

Goa for a luxury beach resort vacation

A one–time hippie paradise, Goa has become India’s go-to spot for a luxury beach break. Sweeping white sands, a string of stunning five-star hotels and the golden sun sliding into the Arabian sea help make this small region perfect for relaxing.

A former Portuguese colony, the state tends to be divided between the beaches north of the capital Panaji and those to the south. And while both play home to some of India’s sharpest five-star resorts, there are plenty of differences to satisfy those who want secluded, sandy spots and those keen on something more active by day and raucous by night.

Anjuna beach, in the north, offers a string of watersports for adrenaline junkies and those keen to break up the hours spent relaxing on their sun loungers. Think jet ski rides, parasailing and wakeboarding.

Party animals can spend the whole night raving at regular full moon parties on Vagator and Baga beaches. Clubs face out onto the sand, attracting plenty of local as well as international guests.

The south’s laid-back vibe is more attuned to those who want to indulge in the best Goan curries and spend their days hanging out by the pool, playing tennis or simply snoozing in the sun.

Here, the resorts tend to be more spaced out, with empty swathes of sand that are perfect for afternoon strolls and languid dips in the Arabian Sea.

Big names, such as the Park Hyatt, offer truly luxurious stays, tending to their guests’ every whim and offering yoga classes and spa treatments on top of private beach access.

Lakshadweep Islands for a luxury scuba diving/swimming vacation

The only coral atolls in India, the Lakshadweep Islands sit 400 kilometers west of the subcontinent. The crystal-clear waters and easy-to-reach reefs make it one of the best diving destinations on the planet.

Getting here requires a certain level of planning, ensuring that the islands never feel swamped with visitors and the delicate ecosystem is carefully protected. All visitors need a special permit, which can either be arranged by local hotels or government booking agencies in advance.

Because of its remote location and the fragility of the coral reefs, flights into the Lakshadweep Islands only operate from Kochi in Kerala. The waters are at their clearest and calmest between October and May, with dive operators found on the islands of Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy. The caves of Kavaratti also make for an excellent day trip for more confident divers.

The uninhabited islands of the Lakshadweep archipelago attract nesting sea turtles, while manta rays can also be spotted in October and November. Keep an eye out for reef sharks and eagle rays, too.

Those who don’t want to venture into the deep can hire snorkeling equipment and cleave close to the palm–lined sandy beaches, where tropical fish dart through the shallows.

And at the end of a long day in the water, the five-star resorts offer the perfect tonic, with spa treatments and sun downers on the beach. This is India at its most relaxed, a place to destress before heading back to the mainland and all of the urban wonders it has to offer.

Goa as a luxury yoga destination

One-time hippie enclave Goa has retained its blissed-out vibe of old. Home to vast sandy beaches and lush forests, its relaxed atmosphere makes it ideal for yoga fanatics who want to learn from the locals while indulging themselves at some of India’s best luxury hotels.

The former Portuguese colony is blessed with countless yoga retreats, some in the hills far away from the tourist crowds on the coast. Others close to the beach, meanwhile, offer access to Goa’s best restaurants and nightlife.

The best bet is to go all in and choose a yoga retreat that offers accommodation as well as classes and delicious local food, all the better to focus on nailing those downward dogs, side planks and tree poses.

Nestled in the hills of northern Goa, Purple Valley is one of the region’s very best all-in-one retreats. With world class Ashtanga yoga teachers and courses lasting from one to four weeks, this is the ideal place to rest, recharge and leave with an improved yoga practice.

There are three main houses overlooking lush gardens, along with a pool and a communal dining area offering the very best in local Goan cuisine, with ingredients bought daily from the local market. The yoga studio is reached via a short walk through tropical gardens with views over the palms and into the surrounding hills.

Handily, there’s also an on-site Ayurveda spa, as well as Wi-Fi access for those who can’t resist the urge to stay in touch with the outside world.

If a full-on retreat is too time intensive, the best luxury hotels offer daily yoga classes, with drop-in sessions available in the capital Panjim and the tourist towns which dot the central beaches. When in Goa, there’s no excuse not to take some time out to recenter on the yoga mat.

Tadoba Andhari tiger reserve for a luxury wildlife safari

The largest national park in the central state of Maharashtra, Tadoba Andhari is arguably the best place in India to see tigers. Some 88 individuals were recorded in 2016. It’s also renowned for its populations of sloth bears, wild dogs and exotic birds.

What makes it particularly special are the tight controls. Visitor numbers are strictly monitored to ensure the ecosystem isn’t harmed by a swell of tourists, with the park only open between October and June.

The best way to experience Tadoba Andhari is to check into one of the luxury lodges around the two main entrance gates at Kolara and Moharli (there’s no accommodation actually inside the park). These offer guided tours, provided by local wildlife experts. Tiger sightings are by no means guaranteed, especially as the reserve has a total area of over 625 square kilometers, so it pays to explore the area over several days to increase the chance of an encounter with one of the world’s most endangered species.

The park is split into three areas, with the Tadoba range in the north, Kolsa range to the south and Moharli range in between. The teak forests, lakes and rivers make it the ideal habitat for tigers, with numbers almost doubling from 2010 to 2016 as part of a huge conservation effort.

Those keen on an authentic experience can camp out in luxury tents at the Irai Safari Retreat, listening across Irai Lake as the park comes alive when the sun goes down.

For those who simply must spot a tiger, Svasara Jungle Lodge offers Jeep tours, with guides able to pick out individual animals. Lucky visitors can see these endangered creatures up close, without the need for binoculars.

It’s not just about the tigers, though. Tadoba is one of India's most biodiverse areas, with jungle cats, cobras, fish eagles and hyenas all found within its boundaries.

Taj Mahal as a historic destination

The Taj Mahal’s dazzling marble edifice makes it unquestionably the most famous building in India. The Muslim mausoleum was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1648 as a burial site for his wife. Its iconic design, pristine gardens and ornate decorative flourishes pull in eight million visitors a year.

The mausoleum and its grounds have been UNESCO protected since 1983 and as visitor numbers continue to soar, the local government is looking to impose limits in a bid to protect the building. As of 2018, visitors are limited to three hours per trip, with an additional charge payable on exit if this is exceeded.

Tickets for foreign visitors cost 1,000 rupees and while doing it alone is possible, taking a guided tour is advisable for those who want to get the most from the experience.

The building is chock full of Indian, Mughul and Islamic influences, the main dome standing at 73 meters, with four minarets in each corner and verses of the Quran inscribed over the entrances and throughout the mausoleum complex.

Initially, Shah Jahan had planned to build another mausoleum across the Yamuna River for his own burial, but after being deposed by his son, he lived out his days under house arrest and now lies alongside his wife in the Taj Mahal. The building and its gardens were restored to their former glory during the 19th century when India was under British rule, having fallen into disrepair as the Mughul Empire came apart.

It pays to arrive early -- the complex opens at 6 a.m. Those who do will not only beat the crowds but also get the chance to see the first rays of sun hit the gleaming marble façade of the main building.

Those here around full moon can take advantage of night time viewings, with the complex open between 8.30 p.m. and 12.30 a.m. two days before and two days after the top of the lunar cycle.

Hampi as a historic destination

Modern day Hampi is home to over 500 crumbling temples, palaces, pavilions and elephant stables, all of which make up the one-time capital of the ancient Vijayanagar Empire. The buzzing bazaar, lush paddy fields and palm groves mean it’s well worth lingering for as long as possible.

The UNESCO protected area covers a total of 265 square kilometers. By 1500, Hampi is said to have been the second largest medieval era city after Beijing. Today its ruins are best explored on foot. A good pair of hiking boots is a must, as the terrain is rough, but the effort is worth it. It makes exploring the hidden corners of Hampi easy and means it’s possible to scale Matanga Hill at the end of the day for stunning sunset views over the boulder fields and towering Virupaksha Temple.

The latter is perhaps the biggest draw in Hampi, its 50-meter gateway impossible to miss. Dating back to the 7th century, this was a key place of worship within the Vijayanagar Empire, with inscriptions to Shiva found throughout the complex. It’s possible to while away an entire day here, taking in the numerous smaller shrines, nooks and crannies.

While the hectic bazaar can feel tourist heavy, it’s a good spot to pick up souvenirs, with plenty of places to rest and refuel during a day of sightseeing. It’s also worth noting that it’s best to arrive in Hampi by train. Hospet, the nearest station, is just half an hour away. The nearest airport, at Hubli, involves a hectic three-hour drive.

Chandigarh as a destination for art/architecture fans

Cosmopolitan Chandigarh is capital of both Indian Punjab and Haryana states, as well as being a union territory run by the central government. More importantly, it is the face of modern India. Designed by renowned architect Le Corbusier in 1950, following India’s independence and partition in 1947, its brutalist buildings and wide boulevards make it unlike anywhere else on the subcontinent.

Chandigarh was conceived in the tumultuous days of partition, when Lahore, the capital of Punjab, became part of Pakistan. The first pre–planned city in India, initial plans were drawn up by architects in New York before Le Corbusier, a Swiss–born Frenchman known for his idiosyncratic style, took up the mantle and made it his own at the turn of the decade.

The result is a city that feels a world away from the chaos of Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Its wide roads and avenues belie the fact that there are more cars here per head than any other Indian city, with ample space for everyone. The buildings tend to be classic mid-century concrete, with large windows, flat roofs and sharp corners.

Le Corbusier’s most striking creations can be found in the Capitol Complex in the heart of Chandigarh. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2016, it houses key government buildings including the High Court and Secretariat.

Those keen to learn more about how Chandigarh developed into a thriving, modern metropolis should make for the excellent Chandigarh Architecture Museum, which houses models, artefacts and documents about how the city was planned and built.

Nek Chand’s famous rock garden is also a must–see. Developed secretly by the Indian artist in his spare time back in 1957, its waterfalls, courtyards and sculptures attract thousands of visitors each year.

The city is split into 47 separate sectors with their own parks, shops and public spaces. The pedestrianized Sector 17 is home to some of Chandigarh’s best shopping, while Sector 22 is where it’s at when it comes to luxury hotels.

Jodhpur as a destination for art/architecture fans

Dominated by both the majestic Mehrangarh Fort and the ancient ‘Blue City’, which tumbles down from its base, Jodhpur is one of India’s most arresting and evocative places. Visually spectacular, its narrow streets are built for exploring.

This is a city that’s simply made for art and architecture buffs. The Mehrangarh Fort is undoubtedly the star attraction. Work on this clifftop colossus was started in 1460 by Rao Jarda, the leader of the Rathore clan who is said to have founded Jodhpur around the same time. The fort requires at least an entire day to get to grips with.

There are seven main gates, not to mention the vertiginous ramparts, which afford stunning views across the city and beyond. Jodhpur is known as the Sun City for its endless bright days, so the light from up on high is nearly always perfect. Within the fort's walls are several palaces and temples, as well as a series of galleries housing paintings, carvings, armor and even turbans.

To get the most out of a trip to the fort, it’s worth taking the audio tour, which does a brilliant job of explaining each section and cluing visitors in on the history and importance of the building and the city beyond.

After exploring the fort, take the path back down into Jodhpur and get lost in the world famous Blue City. The warren of photogenic blue buildings that surround the fort were once home to the city’s Brahmins, the priests of India’s caste system, its alleyways abuzz with hawkers selling clothes, trinkets and musical instruments. The street life and endless chatter is a counterpoint to the museum hush up on the hill and the perfect way to see out the day.

The city’s lush gardens and pretty lakes are not to be missed either. Balsamand Lake is ideal for a picnic in the shade after ticking off the sights.

City and nightlife break in Delhi

The vast national capital territory of Delhi takes in 11 separate districts, including the capital city New Delhi. The ancient Red Fort, colonial era India Gate and Jama Masjid are perhaps its finest sights, but this is a metropolis that demands to be delved into and explored from every angle.

The famous Red Fort should be first on any visitor's list when it comes to sightseeing. Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648, it is Delhi’s best known historic site. Guides are readily available, but the excellent audio tour does a superb job of telling the story of the fort’s construction during the Mughal Empire and its central role in the British push for control of Delhi and India in the 19th century. The museum here opens between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., while the spectacular grounds can be accessed from dawn until dusk.

Of course, the Red Fort isn’t the only must–see sight in Delhi. Humayun’s Tomb, thought to be the inspiration for the Taj Mahal, is not to be missed. Fully restored, its sandstone and marble design is one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in India. Likewise, first time visitors should take in the majestic Jama Masjid and be sure to see the renowned India Gate too.

Beyond the sights, Delhi is a city that gives itself over to getting lost. The spice markets of the old city are legendary, a true assault on the senses. The most famous is Khari Baoli. Dating back to the 17th century and a short distance from the Red Fort, it is Asia’s largest wholesale spice market. For trinkets, souvenirs and clothes, it’s hard to beat the Janpath and Tibetan Market.

For nightlife and partying, New Delhi is the place to be. Connaught Place is the city’s most happening hub, home to the coolest bars and clubs in town. Luxury hotels tend to play host to the swankiest spots, such as Lithiyum at the Ahsok, although those after something a bit more casual should head to rooftop spots like Summer House Café.

Mumbai as a city/nightlife destination

India’s biggest metropolis, with over 18 million people, Mumbai is a city that positively thrums with energy. Its chaotic streets, stunning colonial era architecture and world-class nightlife make it the perfect place for city Lovers. It’s a cultural capital where there’s no such thing as a quiet night.

Many visitors’ first encounter with Mumbai will be the vast Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. A masterpiece of colonial era design, Mumbai’s main train station is the headquarters of the Indian railway network and even has UNESCO heritage status. The main building dates back to 1887, when it was commissioned to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Blending Indian and British styles it’s one of India’s finest buildings.

Similarly, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is also worth exploring, even for those who aren’t spending the night. This opulent outpost sits adjacent to the Gateway to India arch, with views across the Arabian Sea. Afternoon tea here is one of Mumbai’s ultimate indulgences.

For those who want to do things slightly differently, there’s plenty beyond the main attractions. The northwestern suburb of Bandra is home to a lively arts scene and a series of hip cafes and bars. Dive bars rub shoulders with designer stores, while the city’s heritage, in the shape of Bandra Fort and Mount Mary Church, means culture vultures will be as satisfied as shoppers and party fiends.

The latter will find plenty to keep them entertained across Mumbai, from the excellent craft brews at Doolally, the city’s hippest bar, with two taprooms and a variety of locally made beers, to Toto’s Garage where vintage cars and classic rock help make for a unique and bustling vibe.

Any trip to Mumbai is incomplete without a visit to the Iskcon Juhu temple. Devotees of Hare Krishna throng here to worship among colorful statues and murals. After touring the compound and grabbing a bite at the in–house vegetarian restaurant, nearby Juhu Beach is a great place to catch some sun and watch the locals unwind.

Goa as an upmarket restaurant/foodie destination

Goa retains much of the laid-back, hippie vibe it was renowned for in the 1960s. But it’s also home to a string of swanky restaurants and some superb beachside spots, serving fresh fish curries and other local delicacies.

The former Portuguese colony’s five-star hotel scene means there are a string of upmarket spots to choose from. For local fish cooked over an open fire, it’s impossible to beat the Park Hyatt. Its Palms restaurant is set right on Arossim Beach, perfect for watching the sun slip into the Arabian Sea while in house chefs pull together local delicacies using the freshest ingredients.

The Leela, in the far south, is the best place to try an abundance of local Goan and pan Indian dishes, made to order at cooking stations where guests can see their meals being pulled together.

More adventurous foodies will find plenty to shout about on Goa’s streets and in its ubiquitous beach shacks. The latter are dotted all the way along the coast, especially along the tourist-friendly beach of Candolim. Ryan’s Shack is arguably the best around. Its fish curry is the stuff of local legend, pulling in new customers and diehard fans daily. The good news is that nearly all the shacks serve up first rate dishes. Look for those with the biggest crowd and it’s a safe bet that they’ll be making some of the best curries on the seafront.

For something a bit more formal, The Fisherman’s Wharf, set amongst the backwaters of the south is definitely worth seeking out. Shellfish is its specialty, with the chefs creating unique curries that can’t be found elsewhere.

Further inland, the basic, but brilliant Spice in Karaswada serves up fish that comes off the boats daily. Its tandoori crab is superb and should be top of any food fanatic's list when they come to Goa.

Delhi as a street food destination

The national capital territory of Delhi takes in 11 separate districts, including the capital city New Delhi. The Red Fort, India Gate and Jama Masjid are its finest sights, but for foodies, those pale in comparison to the stunning street food that’s up for grabs on every corner.

The best tip for any foodie heading to Delhi is to follow the queue. If there’s a long line of locals, it’s likely the food will be delicious and won’t lead to a case of the infamous Delhi belly.

With that in mind, the best place to start is in Old Delhi. The stalls around Chadni Chowk market are the stuff of legend, the riot of smells pulling food lovers in all directions. It’s best to eat small plates and try as many places as possible. Treats like kachori, paratha and aloo chaat are ideal ways to start.

For something more substantial, the famous Natraj Dahi Bhalle has been in the same spot for over 80 years, its dahi vada is widely regarded as the best in India, let alone Delhi. Alternatively, Karim’s is known for its meat–heavy dishes. Established in 1913, its curries are worth queueing for.

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed when searching for the best street food in India’s capital. To that end, it’s well worth taking a tour. It’s worth kicking back with a drink after all that eating and Connaught Place is home to Delhi’s most happening bars. For a casual place to grab a beer and let all the best food in Delhi go down, it’s hard to beat Summer House Café.

Varanasi as a historic/spiritual/cultural destination

The holiest city in Hinduism, and the oldest in India, Varanasi, formerly known as Benares, is India’s most famous pilgrimage site. Millions of Hindus visit every year to wash away their sins in the passing waters of the sacred Ganges. Visceral and vibrant, its waterside ghats and narrow alleyways are among the most intense and unforgettable places in the entire country.

The best way to understand the importance of Varanasi is to take a boat trip on the Ganges at sunrise. Pilgrims and locals crowd the banks to greet the day with a solemn puja ceremony. This offering of prayers often involves using the holy water of the river, with worshippers standing in the shallows and bathing to see in the day.

Getting up close to these daily rituals from dry land is also essential. Follow the winding paths down to the ghats and see Varanasi come to life. Pilgrims cleanse themselves while others wash clothes or simply say prayers. It pays to remember that cremations take place on the Ganges every day, with dead bodies often seen passing by.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple is Varanasi’s most famous site. The crowds here can be boisterous and a lot to deal with, but a visit is truly worthwhile. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the site was first used for a temple over 3,000 years ago. The current building dates back to 1776, its gold-plated dome glinting under the searing sun. Security checks are in operation and all electronic items must be left outside. Visitors are often jostled as they get in as crowds look to absolve their sins by touching the lingam of Shiva. The Gyan Kupor Well, located in the northern part of the complex, is said to offer access to a higher plane to those who drink its waters. Non-Hindus are forbidden to enter.

As the sun drops, Varanasi lives up to its nickname as the city of light, with the ceremony of aarti performed each evening. This involves lamps and candles being lit and floated down the Ganges, the ghats seething as Hindu priests sing and make their offerings to Mother Ganges.

Rishikesh as a destination for traditional yoga

Rishikesh, the so–called yoga capital of the world, will forever be known as the place where The Beatles came to practice transcendental meditation in 1968, at a retreat run by the controversial Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

But it’s not just those looking for inner peace that will find succor here. The area’s ashrams, set on the Ganges and up in the Himalayan foothills, are among the best places in India to learn traditional yoga while spending time in one of the country’s most idyllic spots.

Set in lush gardens, with the mountains towering high above, Phool Chatti is among the very best yoga destinations in Rishikesh.

Its name means “land of flowers” and there’s been an ashram here for over 120 years. It offers a holistic approach, with yoga taught alongside meditation, chanting and walks through the surrounding countryside.

On the banks of the Ganges, Omkarananda Ganga Sadan has its own ghat leading down to the holy waters and specializes in Iyengar yoga. As well as offering longer courses, this ashram also has a program of daily drop–in classes, ideal for those passing through or anyone who wants to try yoga for the first time.

Perhaps the most famous ashram in Rishikesh, Parmarth Niketan focuses on traditional yoga methods, with one week and ten-day long courses for all levels available.

Sivananda, which holds ashrams across the United States, Canada and Europe, has its base in Rishikesh, with free taster classes for first timers and longer courses for old hands. This is a more spiritual and meditative ashram, so those keen on a proper workout may want to try an alternative.

It’s not just about the yoga though. Rishikesh’s location on the Ganges means it’s the perfect place to take in an aarti ceremony, where music is performed as fire and flower offerings are floated onto the river.

Goa as a party destination

Goa has been known as a party destination ever since the hippies arrived in the 1960s. Today the scene is a lot more commercialized, with swish clubs to go alongside the all night beach raves, but it remains the number one place in India for anyone looking to have a good time, all the time.

Arguably Goa’s most famous club, Hill Top is known for pulling internationally renowned trance DJs. Set in a palm grove not far from Anjuna Beach, it’s the perfect place to keep the summery vibes going after the sun goes down.

For those who want to keep their options open, club hopping along Tito’s Lane is the way to go. This strip of bars and nightclubs near Baga Beach is not for the faint–hearted, but a memorable if hazy night is guaranteed.

The beaches in the north of the state are great for impromptu get togethers and late-night drinks. Anjuna and Baga have plenty of simple shacks pumping out everything from dub to psytrance, with no need to head back and freshen up after a day’s sunbathing. Grab a beer and let the evening flow.

Although the vibe in Goa is never anything but chilled out, it’s important to remember that there are cultural differences to respect, including dress and conduct after a few drinks.

During elections, “code of conduct” rules mean alcohol can’t be served after 10 p.m. Shacks and clubs get around this by holding day parties instead, meaning the good times just happen to start a bit earlier than usual.

It’s best to avoid heading to Goa between June and September. This is monsoon season, and with most clubs being outdoors, many places are shut. Outside of these months though, the party never truly ends. And if it all gets too much, the beach and Goa’s excellent selection of luxury hotels will help soothe any sore heads.

Shillong, Meghalaya as a rock music destination

Known as “the rock capital of India” thanks to its preponderance of bands and musicians, Shillong’s thriving scene is a mecca for those looking to indulge their love of music.

It’s not just rock though - metal, hip–hop and jazz have all boomed here in recent years. The city’s clubs and bars have room for all genres, making Shillong perfect for music magpies and those with eclectic taste.

Late October is perhaps the best time of year to head to Shillong. NH7 Weekender, India’s premier traveling music festival, has been pitching up here since 2015, with local and western acts on the bill. Over 40,000 people attended the 2017 edition.

Shillong wears its musical heritage with pride, particularly its favorite son, Lou Majaw. Known as “the Indian Bob Dylan,” his songs can be heard throughout the city. To get a true sense of his sound, download some tracks and take a stroll through the backstreets. It’s the perfect way to see Shillong from a local’s perspective.

There are a host of great music bars to choose from, but Cloud 9 is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch. This rooftop spot does a strong line in classic rock. It’s also the best place to get sweaty and see emerging acts do their thing.

As a former hill station during the British Raj, Shillong also has some excellent sights. Check out the Don Bosco Museum, stroll down to Umiam Lake and scale Shillong Peak for huge views of the surrounding area.

Tadoba Andhari as a hiking and wildlife destination

The largest national park in the central state of Maharashtra, Tadoba Andhari is arguably the best place in India to see tigers. A total of 88 were recorded here in 2016. It’s also renowned for its populations of sloth bears, wild dogs and exotic birds.

Tadoba Andhari’s tight controls are what makes it particularly special. Visitor numbers are strictly monitored to ensure the ecosystem isn’t harmed by a swell of tourists, with the park only open between October and June. It’s also shut every Tuesday.

The best way to experience Tadoba Andhari is to check into one of the luxury lodges around the two main entrance gates at Kolara and Moharli (there’s no accommodation actually inside the park). These offer guided tours, led by local wildlife experts. Tiger sightings are by no means guaranteed, especially as the reserve has a total area of over 625 square kilometers, so it pays to explore the area over several days to increase the chance of an encounter with one of the world’s most endangered species.

The park is split into three areas, with the Tadoba range in the north, Kolsa range to the south and Moharli range in between. The teak forests, lakes and rivers make it the ideal habitat for tigers, with numbers almost doubling from 2010 to 2016 as part of a huge conservation effort.

Those keen on an authentic experience can camp out in luxury tents at the Irai Safari Retreat, listening across Irai Lake as the park comes alive when the sun goes down.

For those who simply must spot a tiger, Svasara Jungle Lodge offers jeep tours, with guides able to pick out individual animals. Lucky visitors can see these endangered creatures up close, without the need for binoculars.

It’s not just about the tigers, though. Tadoba is one of India's most biodiverse areas, with jungle cats, cobras, fish eagles and hyenas all found within its boundaries.

Wildlife watching in the park happens from the safety of a jeep, but those keen to wander can pull on their boots and take a walk around the large resorts which dot the edge of the protected parkland.

Elephanta Island caves as an adventure destination

Positioned only 10 kilometers from Mumbai Harbour, Elephanta Island’s caves offer a stunning glimpse of India’s ancient past. The seven caves date from between the fifth and eighth centuries, with many perfectly preserved carvings and sculptures on show.

The name of the island is derived from Portuguese colonialists, after they first saw the elephant statues here in the 17th century. Elephanta Island was ceded to the British in 1661, but only after the monuments had been severely damaged.

Since 1987, the island (also known by its local name of Gharapuri) has been protected by UNESCO, and its preserved caves and sculptures attract thousands of tourists on day trips from Mumbai.

The main draw is the Great Cave, where the most intact remains on Elephanta can be found. This includes a six-meter-high sculpture featuring three faces of Lord Shiva.

While guides are available, those who want to explore Elephanta at their own pace can take advantage of the excellent audio tour. It’s worth bringing a torch, as some of the nooks and crannies are extremely dark and it’s easy to miss some of the finer details of the carvings.

Visitors should note that the caves are closed on Mondays. Some touts may still try and sell tickets for this day anyway, so beware. The trip from Mumbai takes one hour, with boats leaving every ten minutes. There are no places to stay on the island, meaning visitors will need to find accommodation in the city itself.

Once back in Mumbai, it’s worth taking in the sprawling Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. A masterpiece of colonial era design, Mumbai’s main train station is the headquarters of the Indian railway network and, like Elephanta, it has UNESCO status.

Any trip to Mumbai would be incomplete without a visit to the Iskcon Juhu temple. Devotees of Hare Krishna throng here to worship among colorful statues and murals. After touring the compound and grabbing a bite at the in–house vegetarian restaurant. Nearby Juhu Beach is a great place to catch some sun and watch the locals unwind.

Great Rann of Kutch as an adventure destination

The largest salt desert in the world, the Great Rann of Kutch is one of India’s most beguiling places. Spread over 10,000 square kilometers within the wider Thar desert, its vast expanse is unlike anywhere else on the subcontinent. Coming here requires planning and an adventurous spirit, but the rewards make the effort worthwhile.

The best time to visit is between November and February, when the spectacular Rann Utsav takes place. This annual festival sees a vast tent city of stalls, shops and accommodation rise over the salt plains.

Visitors can pick up local handicrafts such as handmade textiles and Bandhani sarees, take a tour of the nearby wild ass sanctuary or simply meet and spend time with the people who call this part of Gujarat home. Performance of dance and traditional music take place every evening, meaning there’s a party vibe even in this most remote of places.

Wildlife lovers can explore a range of nearby reserves, including areas dedicated to the Great Indian bustard and the vast Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to thousands of flamingos.

The Great Rann is a mecca for landscape photographers, especially when the full moon rises over the desert during Rann Utsav. The endless views make for otherworldly images that’ll put friends’ holiday snaps into the shade on social media. It’s best to bring a tripod to get sharp images of the night sky.

Thanks to its proximity to the border between India and Pakistan, visitors to the Great Rann of Kutch must secure a permit first. Written permission can be obtained from the Gujarat Police in the town of Bhuj. As well as security concerns, the area’s biodiversity is extremely fragile, with environmental and agricultural pressures leading to worries about its long-term future.

The area is inaccessible between June and September, when monsoon rains inundate the region and leave the salt desert underwater.

Jaisalmer as an adventurous escape

Jaisalmer, the Golden City, rises like a mirage from the Rajasthan desert. Steeped in history, a one–time stop–off for camel trains, today the ancient citadel is home to countless market stalls, a stunning palace and backstreets crying out to be explored.

All roads in Jaisalmer lead to the sandstone fort, inside which lie its most famous sights. Built in 1156, today it is still home to a quarter of the city’s population, making for a fascinating experience.

Kick off with a tour of the Royal Fort, either with a local guide or the excellent audio guide. The latter takes around 90 minutes. After a quick break, it’s time to discover the seven Jain temples, arguably the fort’s biggest draw.

The Jain religion is a key part of Jaisalmer’s history and these ornate temples, which date back to the 15th and 16th century, are not to be missed. Visitors need to remove their shoes and any leather items (a must in all Jain places of worship) and should be aware that the temples only open between 8 a.m. and midday.

The Jain influence can also be seen in the beautiful havelis. These well-preserved mansions are just 10 minutes from the fort’s main gate. One is now a museum, with artefacts dating back to the early 19th century when the complex of houses was first built.

Jaisalmer’s sandstone architecture and perfect light make it a dream destination for photographers. The changing hues on the fort’s walls at sunset mean it demands to be snapped from all angles.

The city’s far away location and easy charm, plus its great access to the desert, make it feel a world apart from the more hectic corners of India. Adventurous travelers heading here will not be disappointed.

Meghalaya as a jungle trekking destination

Known as the “abode of clouds,” the mountain state of Meghalaya in India’s northeast is home to some of the wettest places on Earth. Monsoon rains have carved out a series of spectacular caves and waterfalls, making it the perfect destination for those who love to spend their vacations exploring. Its lush, cool forests are ripe for hikers and adventurers looking to see another side of India, away from the chaos and bustle of its cities.

The state’s most iconic treks can be found in Cherrapunjee, once the wettest place on Earth, with 464 inches of rain every year. Hiking here is all about traversing the double decker root bridges, made from ficus tree roots and grown across myriad stream beds and rivers by the local Khasi people. Capable of taking dozens of people at a time, these creations are reachable on a six mile walk from the Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort.

Nohkalikai Falls is equally arresting. At 340 meters, it’s the tallest plunge waterfall in India, cascading into a pool of bright green water. The water makes its descent continuously throughout the year thanks to the monsoon rains. But it’s less powerful during the dry season, which runs from December to February.

The falls can be reached on a trek from Cherrapunjee with the chance to take a dip in a number of refreshing pools along the way -- an ideal activity when the heat gets too much in summer. Those who sore feet can catch a taxi back into town.

Wildlife lovers will find plenty of captivating sights at Nokrek Biosphere Reserve. This UNESCO-designated space in the West Garo district of Meghalaya is known for its populations of red pandas and elephants. Tigers are also thought to roam the area, but studies of their numbers have not been conducted and sightings are extremely rare.

Ladakh as a mountain trekking destination

India’s best destination for intrepid climbers and adventurers, Ladakh’s towering peaks offer never-ending views and daring challenges. The once independent region retains a traditional Buddhist feel, with gombas (monasteries) perched on vertiginous hilltops.

Ladakh is a mecca for trekkers, with hikes of varying difficulty found across the region. The most popular route passes through the Markha Valley, with the option of a short, two-day walk between Shillong and Shang Sumdo or a 12-day jaunt crossing the Nimaling Plateau, where yaks and goats graze the pasture, before scaling Kang Yatze, which towers around 6.175 meters above the plain.

Hemis National Park offers peerless access to some of the region’s most endangered wildlife, with the chance to spot snow leopards during winter, as well as brown bears and golden eagles. Treks here can last up to a fortnight and are not for the faint-hearted.

Being a mountainous region, Ladakh can feel distinctly chilly, even in summer. Temperatures plummet even further between October and May, with heavy snow rendering the mountains inaccessible to vehicles. It pays to pack accordingly, especially as the weather can change in an instant. That said, the stunning Frozen River trek, which can take up to three weeks in January, is unlike any other adventure in India. It follows a frozen path through the Zanskar Valley, and provides an opportunity to see the mountains in their full snowy finery without another soul in sight.

Ladakh’s popularity as a tourist destination means there are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a guide. Leh, its largest town, has an array of tour operators. It’s best to visit a few and make sure that group sizes aren’t too large before pulling on a backpack and heading out into the hills.

Some areas of Ladakh require special permits to visit due to its location in the Jammu and Kashmir region, so caution should be exercised while traveling here. Always check government advice before your visit.

Manali as a rafting destination

Adventure fiends have helped turn Manali into India’s go–to destination for all things outdoorsy. It’s no wonder – the lush Beas Valley and the surrounding mountains are home to some of the country’s most beautiful terrain, just waiting to be explored. Additionally, the resort town’s rafting adventures have edged ahead as the adrenaline boosting sport everyone who comes here simply must try.

The first thing to do is pick a distance. Manali tour operators offer short and long rafting trips of around seven or 14 kilometers. Unsurprisingly, the latter is more challenging, with rapids up to grade III, and should only be undertaken by those with previous experience.

Most rafting visitors to Manali will pass through Pirdi. This small village has a dedicated watersports center, with one–stop shop opportunities to find the right trip. Manali town is packed with different tour operators, so it’s essential to research properly and pick a reputable firm. As competition is fierce, it best to go with a company with good reviews and lots of customers.

June and July are the best months to raft in Mahali, with the River Beas delivering conditions to suit all levels. The best trips offer the chance to camp on the riverside after a day of battling white water and trying to stay afloat. Some even combine rafting with paragliding, offering a wholly different perspective on the landscape. Either way, it’s impossible not to fall in love with high passes, deep valleys and raging river.

It pays to pack walking boots, as the trekking around Manali is first rate. Many trailheads start in the main town, with routes winding up into the surrounding forests and mountains. There’s the option to take a one-day stroll or enjoy longer, four-day jaunts with remote camping thrown in. These can be undertaken alone or with the help of a guide.

Auli as a skiing destination

India and skiing might not seem like obvious bedfellows, but the resort of Auli is one of the best places to ski and snowboard on the subcontinent. Located in the state of Uttarakhand, Auli offers guaranteed great powder throughout the winter months. The main season runs from December to March, with the long descents down dramatic Himalayan peaks and over three–meter deep snow easily beating similar runs in Europe and the U.S.’s hottest ski spots.

The good news is that it’s not all off–piste action and terrifying black runs. Local operators such as GMVN offer courses designed to take visitors from gingerly sliding down nursery slopes to weaving their parallel turns on gnarlier runs on seven and 14-day courses.

Other local operators offer packages ranging from two to eight days, including instructors, meals and accommodation. The aim is to make exploring this easily overlooked corner of northern India as relaxing as possible, while boosting those all important ski skills.

Those with their own kit who are keen to hit the slopes without a guide should make sure they’re up in time for sunrise. The sight of the morning sun striking the slopes of the spectacular Nanda Devi will have even the weariest of travelers itching to strap on their skis and get amongst it.

It’s not just about the skiing though. Auli is known for holding some of the best winter trekking in the Himalayas. Auli Skiing offers a stunning walk across the Kuari Pass, with views of the aforementioned Nanda Devi and the Eastern hills of the Garhwal Himalayas. This is a six-day trip, involving camping at altitude and navigating narrow tracks first laid out by goat herds. If time allows, it’s the ideal way to see another side of the mountains and move at a statelier pace when compared with skiing.
