CNN projects Sandy Smith will be the Republican nominee in North Carolina’s 1st District. This is an open-seat race with Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield retiring. Republicans currently control eight of North Carolina’s 13 US House seats. The state gained a 14th district after the 2020 census.
