CNN projects that Republican Glenn Youngkin will win the race for governor in Virginia, defeating former Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Republicans hadn’t won a statewide election in Virginia since 2009. Virginia has a history of electing a governor from the opposite party of the recently elected president. McAuliffe’s win in 2013 during President Barack Obama’s second term was an outlier during decades of an “opposite party streak.” CNN projects that Winsome Sears will win the race for lieutenant governor in Virginia, defeating Hala Ayala. Sears will be the first woman to hold the role and the first woman of color to win statewide office in Virginia. CNN projects that Jason Miyares will win the race for attorney general in Virginia, defeating Mark Herring.
