Nevada’s Democratic caucuses will take place on February 22. Nevada’s Republican Party canceled its caucuses, and all delegates are expected to be allocated to Donald Trump through an alternative presidential preference poll. In the 2016 general election, Hillary Clinton won the state with 47.92% of the vote, compared with Trump’s 45.5%. Before 1992, Nevada went consistently Republican in presidential elections. Since then, Democrats have won the state in five of the seven cycles, including the last three. Prior to 1992, the last Democrats to win the state were John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Republican candidates ordinarily run best in the state’s more lightly populated rural counties. Statewide races are usually won or lost, however, in Democratic-leaning Las Vegas and the surrounding communities of Clark County. 70% of Nevada’s population lives in Clark County. Washoe County, home of Reno, the “biggest little city in the world,” was the most evenly divided area in 2016, voting for Clinton as president and Republican Joe Heck for senator (Heck lost that election to Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto).
