Hawaii canceled its in-person primary on April 4 and set a May 22 deadline for mail-in ballots. In the 2016 general election, Hillary Clinton won Hawaii with 62.22%, compared with Donald Trump’s 30.04%. Hawaii is a Democratic stronghold in presidential races. It has voted for Republican presidential candidates only twice since gaining statehood in 1959 – Richard Nixon in 1972 and Ronald Reagan in 1984. Democrats control the state Legislature and the governor’s office. The state’s four-person congressional delegation is also entirely made up of Democrats.
