West Virginia moved its primary from May 12 to June 9. In the 2016 general election, Donald Trump won West Virginia with 68.5% of the vote, compared with Hillary Clinton’s 26.43%. For more than half a century, West Virginia was one of the most Democratic states in the country. From 1932 to 1996, the state voted Republican only three times: in the GOP landslide years of 1956, 1972 and 1984. George W. Bush, however, carried West Virginia by solid margins in both 2000 and 2004.He won the state by 6 points in 2000 and 13 points in 2004. JohnMcCain won in 2008 with 55.71%. Trump won West Virginia by 42 points. In a state that still depends, at least in part, on the coal industry, Republican campaigns often tap into voters’ concerns over the environmental and energy policies of the national Democratic Party. The state Legislature and governor’s office are controlled by Republicans. Its US Senate seats are split between the parties, while its House seats are all held by Republicans.
