Rhode Island moved its primary from April 28 to June 2 because of the coronavirus pandemic. In the 2016 general election, Hillary Clinton won Rhode Island with 54.41%, compared with Donald Trump’s 38.9%. Rhode Island is a Democratic stronghold. Democrats have won 13 of the last 15 presidential elections in Rhode Island. The most Democratic part of Rhode Island is around Providence in the state’s northeast corner. Republicans generally do better in the wealthier areas of western Rhode Island. The state Legislature, governor’s office and congressional delegation are controlled by Democrats.
