New Jersey moved its primary to July 7 because of the coronavirus pandemic. In the 2016 general election, Hillary Clinton won New Jersey with 55.45% of the vote, compared with Donald Trump’s 41.35%. During the 1980s, New Jersey was generally considered to be a Republican-leaning state. George H.W. Bush carried the Garden State by nearly 14 points in 1988. New Jersey has now voted Democratic in seven straight presidential elections. Democrats control both of the state’s US Senate seats, a majority of its US House seats and both chambers of the stateLegislature. With Phil Murphy’s election in 2017, there is also a Democrat in thegovernor’s mansion.
