In the 2016 general election, Donald Trump won Idaho with 59.26% of the vote, compared with Hillary Clinton’s 27.49%. The GOP currently controls Idaho’s congressional delegation, the governorship and both chambers of the state Legislature. Lyndon Johnson was the last Democrat to carry Idaho in a presidential election. He beat Barry Goldwater by less than 2 percentage points in 1964 (51% to 49%). The last time Democrats captured the governor’s office in Idaho was in 1990, when Cecil Andrus defeated Roger Fairchild to win a fourth term. Democrats won the governor’s office for six consecutive elections from 1970 to 1990.
