California’s primaries will take place on Super Tuesday. In the 2016 general election, Hillary Clinton won the state with 61.73% of the vote, compared with Donald Trump’s 31.62%. California has the largest population of any state — estimated to be 39.5 million — and the most electoral votes, at 55. Democrats control the state Legislature and the governor’s office. Democrats carried California in the last seven presidential elections (1992 through 2016), while Republicans carried the state in the previous six (1968 through 1988). While California leans heavily Democratic, six of its last 10 governors were Republican.
