Virginia

After years as a critical swing state, Virginia has settled into the blue column in statewide races. Last year's win for Gov. Ralph Northam was one of the first major races to portend Democratic strength in the Trump era. Sen. Tim Kaine (D), up for a second term, is expected to defeat Corey Stewart, a Republican who has focused on cultural issues like preserving Confederate statues. On the House side, as many as four GOP-held seats could be in play, and one of the most high-profile races will be in the 10th District, in DC's outer suburbs. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R) will try to hold the seat, while Democrat Jennifer Wexton hopes she can flip a district that supported Hillary Clinton by 10 points in 2016. Virginia has one of the first poll closing times on the East Coast, and those competitive seats could be an early indicator of how the vote may pan out for both parties.
