RAINSVILLE, Alabama (CNN) -- A tornado that touched down Tuesday damaged City Hall, destroyed the town's police cars and left at least 20 people nursing minor injuries, authorities said.

There were no immediate reports of fatalities, but authorities were making a house-by-house assessment of the storm's toll.

"This thing wiped out a third or a fourth of the town," said Christine Haymon, a minister's wife. "My husband was on the roof when he saw it and heard it roar."

The DeKalb County, Alabama, town of 3,875 lost all of its police cars in the storm, said Sue Bowman, director of the Tom Bevill Center, where the local government has temporarily relocated. Police blocked off the downtown area.
