CNN LIVE EVENT/SPECIAL

Joe Brucia News Conference

Aired February 9, 2004 - 09:59   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: I want to go live to Sarasota. Here is Carlie Brucia's father.
Let's listen.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

JOE BRUCIA VICTIM'S FATHER: ... so I think they did the right thing in that regard.

The community here has been so supportive and have done so much and with all the services and all the love and concern that showed. And I want to thank all of you.

And regarding this fund, the Brucia Family Fund, I think that's an inappropriate name. It's not for the Brucia family or any other family. It's (UNINTELLIGIBLE) those in need. It -- I'd like to rename it, if possible, the Carlie Brucia Rescue Fund, and I think that would be a lot more appropriate, and I think that would make Carlie happy.

And for reasons I will not disclose, I will be leaving Florida at this time. I have things I have to do. I have to be with my family. And that's all I'd like to say at this time.

Thank you.

KAGAN: Very short news conference there, a statement from Carlie Brucia's father, Joe, going down to Sarasota. He lives in the New York City area. Speaking out very emotionally. His daughter disappearing on February 1st. A man, Joseph Smith, in custody. Joe Brucia has been very vocal in saying there should be tougher laws that would keep people like the suspect, Joseph Smith, in custody. He has a long criminal record.
