CNN BREAKING NEWS

Supreme Court to Hear Case on Death Sentences for Juvenile Offenders

Aired January 26, 2004 - 10:14   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: This just in to CNN. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to look at the issue of sending young people to death row. It concerns a case of a Missouri man who was 17 at the time when he robbed a woman and apparently wrapped her head in duct tape and then threw her off a railroad bridge back in 1993.
He was given the death penalty, but the Supreme Court has decided to look at the issue as to whether sentencing such people to death is considered cruel and unusual punishment -- something that is banned under the Constitution.

The case is supposed to come before the Supreme Court sometime in June. More on that ahead.
