Vice Principal Sought in Death of Wife Turns Himself In

Aired July 9, 2003 - 11:02   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: First we go to south central California and that is Bakersfield. The FBI is joining the search today, has joined the search for an elementary school vice principle who actually we are hearing has turned himself in.
Police are calling him a likely suspect in the shooting death of five people. Among them, his estranged wife and two children.

Let's get the latest now. We have KBAK reporter Casey Christian (ph) joining us from Bakersfield this morning. And, Casey, it looks like this story is developing clear across the country with word that we're getting that Vincent Brooks has turned himself in.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Daryn, that is absolutely correct. Right now after putting out an APB yesterday throughout the country, police now have word that in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Vincent Brothers has turned himself in.

He came in last night at about 8:00 p.m. Pacific time, and he apparently is not under arrest at this time. But he is standing by waiting for Bakersfield Police investigators to arrive to question him.

Now, he is the husband, the estranged husband, it's believed, of one of the victims of yesterday's terrible crime. What happened was that five people, two women and three children, were found shot to death in their home in central Bakersfield.

It's a terrible tragedy. One woman, a mother, she was 39-years- old. Her children, a male who was 4-years-old, a little girl 23- months-old and a baby just 1 1/2-months-old plus the grandmother, all shot to death.

I didn't know if you -- and that's right now...

KAGAN: Go ahead.

(CROSSTALK)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That's the latest. And at 10:00 the police are going to be having a press conference, Captain Neal Mayhem (ph) will be out here again delivering the latest information. And that's the what we have as the latest. Reporting for CNN live in Bakersfield, California, I'm Casey Christian -- back to you.

KAGAN: All right, Casey. Thank you very much for that. And that's 10:00 a.m. California time, that will be 1:00 p.m. Eastern. And we will be watching that at CNN. Thank you for the latest.
