CNN LIVE EVENT/SPECIAL

One Marine Killed in Incident on Kuwaiti Island

Aired October 8, 2002 - 12:26   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: There has been a deadly shooting incident in Kuwait, not only a deadly shooting incident, but also a mysterious one involving U.S. troops.
I want to bring in CNN producer Hugh Williams. He is on the scene for us. He is joining us live by phone. Hugh, what can you tell us about this incident?

HUGH WILLIAMS, CNN PRODUCER: That is right, Wolf. U.S. military authorities have confirmed that one U.S. Marine has been killed and one has been injured in a shooting incident today on a remote Kuwaiti island.

Reports from the scene are a bit sketchy, but apparently shots were fired from a civilian vehicle at U.S. Marines, who returned fire during an urban assault training exercise. Now, the Marines who were shot were immediately medevaced to a military hospital in Kuwait City where one died. The other injured Marine is expected to recover from his injuries.

The U.S. military says the bodies of the two assailants were handed over to Kuwaiti authorities, and they added that about 30 other civilians in the area at the time of the incident were detained by the U.S. military and handed over to the Kuwaitis where the interior ministry has begun an investigation.

Now, what remains unclear is the nationalities of those who apparently carried out the shooting, or whether or not they are affiliated with any terrorist organization. Neither the U.S. nor Kuwaiti authorities are revealing that information right now, but they're indicating that this does not appear to be an accident -- Wolf.

BLITZER: All right, we'll continue to monitor this story. Hugh Williams on the scene for us in Kuwait.
