| Breaking NewsTwo Hijackers Take Over Russian AirlinerAired March 15, 2001 - 9:01 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to being with some breaking news we have this morning, out of Turkey. A Russian passenger plane was hijacked. This just hours ago, shortly after a takeoff from Istanbul. Turkish authorities say that at least 162 passengers are on board this plane. It was heading to Moscow. And there's some conflicting reports right now about where the hijackers were taking the plane. However, Turkish airports officials say the pilot told the airforce tower in Cyprus that he was flying toward Medina, Saudi Arabia. Two hijackers are believed to be on board the aircraft. Let's check in now with our Steve Harrigan who's standing by in Moscow. He's got the latest from there -- Steve. STEVE HARRIGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Leon, the Russian Foreign Ministry has just confirmed that, in deed, there are 162 passengers on board. That it was, in fact, a Russian airline. It's called Vnukovo Airline. This was a charter flight from Istanbul to Moscow. And that there are two hijackers reportedly armed with knives, who had taken that plane under siege. Now, there's no word yet on the identity of those hijackers, or on what their demands are -- Leon. HARRIS: All right, thank you, Steve. We will get back to you and let you work to sort it through that angle. And we will continue to follow that story and deliver you any developments as they come here to the CNN center.
