Plato Cacheris to Represent Veteran FBI Agent Accused of Espionage

Aired February 20, 2001 - 10:32 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: And more developments now on a story we've been following all morning, the case of a veteran FBI agent who has been arrested, charged with spying for a number of years, allegedly, for the Russians.

With more on that, here's Jeanne Meserve -- Jeanne.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Robert Philip Hanssen, Daryn, is going to be arraigned in less than an hour's time in federal court in Virginia. And CNN has learned that the attorney who will be representing Hanssen in the courtroom is Plato Cacheris. Plato Cacheris is a well-known player here in Washington, came to national prominence because he represented Monica Lewinsky during the whole White House scandal.

So, once again, Plato Cacheris is going to be representing Robert Philip Hanssen when he is arraigned this morning. We do expect to hear remarks from him after that arraignment takes place.

Daryn, we'll bring you the latest when we have it.

KAGAN: All right, Jeanne, thanks for that update. More just ahead.
