Texas Fugitives Arrested After TV Interview

Aired January 24, 2001 - 6:47 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JASON CARROLL, CNN ANCHOR: We are going to turn things right back over to Frank Buckley, who is live in Colorado Springs. We want to get another quick update in terms of what's happening there in this developing story -- Frank.

STOUFFER: Hi, Frank.

BUCKLEY: Jason and Linda, again the two suspects -- the two fugitives, who have been at large for more than a month now after the prison breakout in Texas on December 13, are finally in custody.

Patrick Murphy Jr. and Donald Newbury, the final two fugitives who have been outstanding, were taken into custody shortly before 4:00 a.m. local time here. They were discovered last night in a Holiday Inn room here, very close to where the van that they had been using, according to police, was found.

Then a -- during the negotiations that occurred overnight, police had a request from these two fugitives to be interviewed live by a local television station. The local television provided a -- an anchor, Eric Singer, to go to a portion of this Holiday Inn, where they set up a live camera and a phone connection to this room.

Then at 3:29 a.m. local time, they broadcast live the interview with first Patrick Murphy, Jr., then Donald Newbury. Each of the fugitives honoring a commitment they made to the negotiators to speak for only five minutes. Then shortly thereafter, they came out of the room and were arrested by local police.

We should note that local police asked the broadcast entities, the television stations, CNN and others here, not to broadcast that live. CNN did honor that request not to broadcast the live interview by police.

After the two fugitives were taken into custody, CNN then made a decision to broadcast the statements, after they were in custody.

Jason and Linda, back to you.

CARROLL: All right. Frank Buckley coming to us live from Colorado Springs. Thanks very much, Frank.
