Gunman Takes Children Hostage at Arizona Elementary School

Aired October 24, 2000 - 3:02 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We have a situation in Glendale, Arizona, which is a suburb of Phoenix. Glendale police are telling us an armed and masked male is holding about 10 children hostage at an elementary school. We have very little information on the subject. We're relying on our affiliate stations in Arizona at the moment.

As you know, in the early stages of a story like this, the information is not only sketchy but sometimes inaccurate.

We're going to check in with KSAZ Television in Phoenix to get their take on what's happening now in Glendale.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And then there's this situation with this armed student, armed with a 9-millimeter handgun, at Pioneer Elementary School at 63rd Avenue and Greenway.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And we have Skyfox on the way to that scene as well as ground crews, and we will have live team coverage for you on this breaking story throughout the newscast. Stay with us for that.

WATERS: OK. KTVK Television. Let's check in with them, see if they have anything more on it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Residential area.

WATERS: We have gotten a picture from KTVK, but little else at the moment. Let me give you what we have from the Peoria Unified School District.

A spokeswoman there says children and staff members in parts of this school are in a lockdown situation. We'll have to check to see what that means exactly. We can only assume that the report we're getting of an armed student with a 9-millimeter pistol is holding some hostages and other parts of the school are being locked up to prevent this situation from spreading to other parts of the school.

But we are not yet in contact with police nor the school. All we're relying on are some sketchy reports from wire services and our affiliate stations in Phoenix.

KPHO Television is another of our affiliates in Phoenix. They also are on the story. Let's see what they have to report. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We'll bring you more information just as soon as it becomes available. And we're working on a picture, getting a live report from the school itself.

WATERS: There you can tell how early on we are in this situation, but essentially the story is a hostage situation, a masked male armed, 9-millimeter pistols, is one of the reports we've just heard, holding students at an elementary school in Glendale. That's a suburb of Phoenix. That's about all we know for sure.

As soon as we know more, we'll pass it along. Now back to Bobbie and "TALKBACK LIVE."
