Parents Won't Fight British Court Order to Separate Conjoined Twins

Aired September 28, 2000 - 11:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Want to tell you about this breaking news coming out of London. These parents of the conjoined twins that are known for court purposes as "Mary" and "Jody," the parents have decided not to fight the court order that demanded they have the surgery, that doctors go ahead and operate to separate these girls. That surgery would mean -- and doctors said this all along -- that one of the girls, Mary, would die because she doesn't have her own heart and her own lungs. The parents have been fighting that order, saying that they were very religious, devout Roman Catholics and wanted to leave it in the hands of God.

But once again, out of London, the decision by the parents means that the surgery will go through.

The girls are 6 weeks old. Doctors had said in court papers that this surgery had to be done before they were three months old in order to save the life of Jody.

More on that ahead in "MORNING NEWS."
