(CNN) -- Several popular titles are in the running for an Emmy this weekend, and they don't even have to compete with "Seinfeld" to win.

This movie, starring Angelina Jolie as Gia Carangi, a former supermodel who rose to fame in the 1970s, follows Carangi's life from her peak as a model through her decline into drug addiction and, eventually, her death from AIDS in 1986. Faye Dunaway also stars as top model agency founder Wilhelmina Cooper. HBO's "Gia" was noted for not glamorizing the unspoken but evident "heroin chic" dominating the modeling industry.

Showtime's remake of the 1957 classic "12 Angry Men," which originally was directed by Sidney Lumet and starred such notables as Henry Fonda and E.G. Marshall, had a no less luminary cast in 1997: Jack Lemmon, Ossie Davis and George C. Scott are just three of the big names to grace the screen in William Friedkin's cable version, which was nominated for a Golden Globe but lost to the TNT movie "George Wallace." Both Lemmon and Scott were nominated for Golden Globes as well; only Scott won his Golden Globe category, taking home a Best Supporting Actor award for the television category.

In the film, 11 jurors rush to condemn a Latin American youth being tried for the murder of his father, before reviewing the evidence. But one juror holds out for a not-guilty verdict, setting the stage for heated arguments and passionate debate.

The only broadcast network offering to make the Emmys cut, the CBS drama "What the Deaf Man Heard" has its own all-star cast, including James Earl Jones, Bernadette Peters, and in the lead role, Matthew Modine as a man whose mother disappeared mysteriously 26 years earlier as they traveled to Georgia.

Upon his arrival in small-town Georgia, he ceases speaking and pretends to be unable to hear, finding it an effective ploy to protect himself and to learn more about the people around him. But eventually he witnesses a crime, and must testify.

One of a number of Vietnam War-related movies to make an appearance over the Memorial Day weekend, HBO's "A Bright Shining Lie" was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Neil Sheehan. Donal Logue stars as an idealistic journalist whose illusions of a man he considered a war hero (military adviser John Paul Vann, played by Bill Paxon) are shattered when he's sent to the front lines to cover the war.

The final entry is also an HBO production, and like "12 Angry Men," was nominated for multiple Golden Globe awards. Actor Ving Rhames, who won his Golden Globe category (Best Actor), plays the prominent fight promoter in this biography. "Don King: Only in America" follows King's rise from street thug to success, as he arranges a major fight with boxing great Muhammed Ali for a charity. King has been an icon of the boxing landscape for three decades, and Rhames has won critical acclaim for portraying the promoter with finesse.
