Bradley files statement of candidacy

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, January 12) -- Just a month after launching a presidential exploratory committee, former Senator Bill Bradley filed papers Tuesday officially entering the 2000 race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The New Jersey Democrat filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), according to campaign spokesman Eric Hauser. Bradley will make a formal public announcement sometime in the spring.

Bradley notified the commission of his change in status, though the FEC recognizes no difference between an exploratory committee and a full-blown presidential campaign committee.

Hauser said Bradley took the step in order to move his presidential campaign activities into higher gear. The campaign will announce a major travel schedule early next week, including stops scheduled in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The only Democrat to have filed with the FEC is Vice President Al Gore.

Other Democrats said to be exploring a run are House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.

Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone had expressed interest in a possible run but took himself out of the field last weekend. And Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey announced in December he would not be a candidate.
