A pro-choice moderate who does not embrace the Gingrich agenda, Granger has been criticized for being too liberal for the Republican Party. But as mayor of Fort Worth she was praised for slashing the crime rate with innovative "community policing" and had a good base of support from the business community. She will need all of that support to win a seat that has not been occupied by a Republican this century.

This seasoned campaigner, who took on powerhouse Phil Gramm in 1990 (losing by 23%), has a better chance against Kay Granger, another former Fort Worth mayor. A moderate, like Granger, Parmer believes in balancing the budget without sacrificing environmental preservation or funding for Medicare and Social Security.
