Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died after being shot during a speech in Nara, Japan, on Friday, July 8. Abe was rushed to the hospital, but efforts to save him failed and he died due to blood loss, doctors told reporters on Friday evening. He was 67.
A suspect, a local man in his 40s identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.
Abe served as Japan's prime minister from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.
