Stanford is finally back on the mountaintop.

The Cardinal won its third national title in women's basketball — and its first in 29 years — with a 54-53 victory over Arizona on Sunday.

Stanford has long been one of the premier programs in the sport, making it to the Final Four 14 times since 1990. But in recent years, Tara VanDerveer's team has been unable to close the deal.

This time, it was different.

The Cardinal (31-2) dominated the boards Sunday and got balanced scoring from throughout the lineup to beat Arizona, a fellow Pac-12 team, for the third time this season. Arizona star Aari McDonald had a shot to win the game at the buzzer, but her turnaround jumper didn't connect.

This was the first NCAA Tournament in two years. Both the men's and women's tournaments were canceled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
