Whether or not you’re hooked on oat milk lattes yet, you can’t deny oat milk’s massive surge in popularity over the past few years. The dairy alternative has flooded into grocery stores and cafés across the country, with sales increasing by over 600% from November 2018 to November 2019. Oat milk converts aren’t necessarily lactose intolerant or looking for vegan-friendly options at their local coffee shops. Many are turning to oat because of its lower impact on the environment compared to traditional milk and other alternatives.
Oatly is an oat milk brand that has found popularity with nondairy milk drinkers across the country and is one of the biggest hitters in the oat milk market. But Oatly’s products don’t stop at just milk. The brand offers a variety of delicious dairy-free products such as oat milk ice cream (which we’ve personally tried and love) and the brand’s most recent venture: Oatgurt, an oat-based yogurt.
Oatgurt might sound a little weird (it’s admittedly not the most appealing name), but we trusted Oatly enough to give it a chance. So we picked up a few cups and tasted the new dairy-free yogurt ourselves.
We were definitely a little skeptical when we first peeled back the lid of Oatgurt. Other nondairy yogurt we’ve had in the past left us a little scarred, and the Oatgurt’s pale, almost gray color wasn’t encouraging at first glance.
If you opt for a fruit-flavored Oatgurt (as opposed to just plain), the fruit is at the bottom of the cup, so after a little bit of stirring you get a smooth, fruity yogurt that’s more colorful in appearance. And with Oatgurt, you get the same cultures as you do in dairy yogurt, plus a few extras that Oatly added in to round out the taste. The Oatgurt had a slightly runny consistency that’s similar to normal yogurt, and it even smelled like its dairy-based cousin with a nice, tangy scent.
Once our other senses were satisfied and we finally tasted it, we were pleasantly surprised by its flavor. The taste of oat came through but wasn’t overpowering. It almost tasted like the cereal milk you’d get from shredded wheat cereal but with the tang of traditional yogurt. The more we ate the more we liked it, and we think it’s the best vegan alternative to yogurt we’ve ever tried.
While the plain was tasty, Oatgurt really shined with its fruity flavor options. Oatly’s new Oatgurt comes in five flavors: plain, strawberry, black cherry, mixed berry and peach. The sweetness of the strawberry, cherry and others masked much of the oat flavor, so they actually tasted remarkably similar to normal yogurt. You could still tell there’s a difference, but only slightly, and it didn’t take away from the experience at all.
The bottom line
Oatly’s Oatgurt is a delicious alternative for people who are lactose intolerant or vegan, or who just love oat milk. While we probably wouldn’t opt for Oatgurt over some fancy dairy-filled options (looking at you, Noosa), at about $2.49 per cup (Instacart prices may vary by location) it’s definitely worth a try.
