US Army officials have identified a soldier found dead less than 20 miles from Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, post media officials said Tuesday.
Pvt. Mehjor Morta, 26, is the third Fort Hood soldier to be found dead in the past month and at least the seventh since the start of 2020, according to previous CNN reporting.
On June 30, investigators discovered human remains later identified as Army Spc. Vanessa Guillen. On July 1, the soldier suspected in Guillen’s disappearance, Spc. Aaron David Robinson, fatally shot himself after police confronted him. Earlier in June, authorities found the body of Private 2nd Class Gregory Wedel-Morales, who went missing last year while driving in Killeen.
Morta, originally of Pensacola, Florida, was discovered unresponsive on Friday near Stillhouse Hollow Lake, Fort Hood officials said in a release.
The Bell County Sheriff’s Office said it’s still investigating Morta’s death.
“We are at a place where we don’t have any information to release at this time. The investigation is ongoing,” sheriff spokesman Lt. Bob Reinhard told CNN on Wednesday.
Morta joined the Army in September 2019 as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle mechanic and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, in May 2020, according to Army officials.
A decorated soldier, Morta was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
“The Black Knight family [the nickname for Morta’s Army unit] is truly heartbroken by the tragic loss of Private Mejhor Morta. I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones,” said Lt. Col. Neil Armstrong, commander of 1st Bn. 5th Cav. Regt. “My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. Private Morta was a great Trooper and this loss is felt by every member within our formation.”
Other Fort Hood soldier deaths in 2020
Several other junior enlisted Fort Hood soldiers have died near the Army base this year, according to Fort Hood reports.
In March, 20-year-old Spc. Shelby Tyler Jones, who’d deployed to Iraq in 2018, died from an apparent gunshot wound in Killeen, Fort Hood officials said. That same month, Spc. Christopher Wayne Sawyer, 29, was found unresponsive in his on-post housing and later died, though Fort Hood officials said no foul play was suspected.
