CNN  —

Southern California will continue to bake in a summer-like heatwave through the weekend. There is the potential for a dozen record highs, including in Sacramento, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Over 18 million people are under heat advisories across southern California.

“Downtown LA hit 92 degrees yesterday and will approach 100 today, which will likely break the old 93-degree daily record high,” CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen says.

The hottest temperatures will be felt in the inland coasts and valleys where temperatures will be in the 90s.

In the mountains and down along the coast, temperatures will only get into the high 70s and 80s.

But don’t expect to crowd the beach for relief this weekend.

“As temperatures climb, it’s as important to remember that the Mayor’s Safer At Home Order is still in effect. The sacrifices we make today will keep our fellow Angelenos safe & allow us to more quickly get back to our L.A. way of life — We are in this together,” tweeted Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore.

The stay at home order, revised on April 10, states that all public beaches, piers, public beach parking lots, and beach access points remain closed.

The beaches were closed back in March, just after the first weekend of stay at home orders – one filled with people swarming to the ocean, making it difficult to maintain social distancing.

Los Angeles County tweeted some tips to beat the heat.

  • plan errands/walks around the hottest hours
  • wear lightweight, light-colored clothes
  • drink water
  • do not leave children/pets in cars
  • check on elderly neighbors, family & friends
  • avoid working out with masks on

Heat advances to the east and soars to triple digits

The heat will remain in California this weekend but it will also drift into neighboring states.

“The Heat will build in the Southwest over the weekend,” Hennen says.

An excessive heat watch for another nearly 5 million, including Phoenix, is already issued for the desert region.

“It is going to continue to get hotter over the next few days in Phoenix,” the Phoenix NWS tweeted. “Highs in the upper 90s today will climb well above the triple digit mark by Sunday. The Sunday forecast of 104 would be 16 degrees above the normal of 88.”
