Officers fatally shot a truck driver suspected of stabbing four women at a Tennessee truck stop.
Three of the women, who worked at the Pilot Travel Center in Knoxville where investigators said they were attacked, died of their injuries. The fourth was taken to a hospital for treatment, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.
When they arrived at the travel center Tuesday morning, officers with the Knox County Sheriff’s Department found a victim with stab wounds outside of the store and the suspect, armed with a knife, in the parking lot.
An officer shot and killed the suspect after he refused to drop his weapon, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.
The suspect stabbed four women while at the travel center, investigators said. The three employees, identified as Joyce Whaley, Patricia Nibbe and Nettie Spencer, died at the scene.
The suspect was a 33-year-old from Durham, North Carolina. His motive is unknown.
Pilot Company CEO Jimmy Haslam said the company is providing counseling to the victims’ family members and colleagues.
