Doctors remove giant kidney weighing 16.3 pounds

Doctors of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, in New Delhi, claimed to have removed India's heaviest kidney weighing 7.4 kilograms.

(CNN)Surgeons have removed a kidney weighing 7.4 kilograms (16.3 pounds) -- the equivalent size of two newborn babies -- from a patient in India.

It is thought to be the heaviest kidney ever removed in the country -- and the third heaviest worldwide.
The patient, a 56-year-old male from the Indian capital New Delhi, suffers from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).
A genetic condition, it causes cysts to develop in the kidneys.
