CNN  —

Charlamagne Tha God’s radio show has been a must-hit stop on the campaign trail for 2020 Democratic candidates, giving him an up-close look at the presidential hopefuls.

He told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “Erin Burnett OutFront” on Thursday that South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg was by far the most comfortable of the 2020 Democrats who have come on on his show, “The Breakfast Club,” which he co-hosts with Angela Yee and DJ Envy. The show is based in New York City, but nationally syndicated.

“I just really like Mayor, Mayor Pete,” he said. “I think Mayor Pete is, like, very authentic and very honest.”

He pointed to when Buttigieg was previously on his show and said he did not approve of Chick-fil-A’s politics “but I kind of approve of their chicken.” Buttigieg, who is a married gay man, was alluding to the restaurant’s political controversies, including when the president of the company said in 2012 that Chick-fil-A supports “the biblical definition of the family unit.”

Charlamagne said that was an “honest answer” where Buttigieg didn’t pander to any group, and he said the mayor is “able to see the nuance in things – that’s just honest and authentic.”

When asked who of the 2020 presidential hopefuls was the least comfortable talking about race, Charlamagne said, “I would have to say probably (New Jersey Sen.) Cory Booker, only ‘cause it didn’t seem like Cory had an answer at the time.”

“I think, for a long time, you know, Democrats have gotten the loyalty of the African-American community, and they’ve gotten that loyalty but haven’t really done anything in return,” he said.

“So now you have a lot of black people saying no,” he said, “like, we want to know exactly what you’re doing specifically for black people. We want to know exactly, you know, what type of agenda you have for African-Americans.”

He said that “black people have just been loyal to the Democrats for a long time for no reason” and Democratic candidates have been “used to just saying, ‘Hey, vote for me. I’m the opposite of whatever’s on the other side.’ ”

Charlamagne said he thought Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California was being genuine when she was talking about race, “because she has no reason not to be.”

Harris was previously on his radio show and talked about being able to make “the best” collard greens. Charlamagne told Harris at the time that people would accuse her of “pandering to black people” with that comment.

“Sometimes I think we look at politicians and we just think that they’re BS-ing us so much,” Charlamagne told Burnett. “So when she says something like that, you’re looking at it like, come on now, you don’t cook no collard greens, but then you gotta check yourself and be like, why wouldn’t she be able to cook collard greens?”

Charlamagne also called President Donald Trump a “bully” and “the most insecure man in the world.”
