Powerful tornadoes plowed through Alabama's Lee County on Sunday, March 3, killing at least 23 people and leaving homes in ruins.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said that after the tornadoes, there are "just basically slabs left where once stood a home." Smiths Station Mayor F.L. "Bubba" Copeland described it as "unbelievable devastation."

At least a dozen tornadoes touched down in Alabama and Georgia on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, and there were also reported tornadoes in Florida.

The tornadoes are part of the same system that is bringing winter weather to much of the eastern United States this week, CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said.
