Beijing (CNN)A man has been killed after a series of explosions at an apartment building in the northeastern Chinese city of Changchun Friday, local authorities said in a statement.
One dead after multiple explosions in Chinese apartment building
Dramatic video from the scene of the explosions appeared to show people running away from the building as multiple blasts took place at the foot of the structure and on a higher floor.
Broken glass from windows can be seen falling from the building and onto the ground.
In its statement, the Changchun city government said the first report of an explosion was received by the fire department at 3.13 p.m. local time (2.13 a.m. ET).
A car had exploded in the parking lot in an underground car park at the Wanda Plaza apartment building on Hongqi Street, the statement said.
Just minutes later, a second explosion in an office on the 30th floor of the building sprayed smoke and glass onto the ground below.
"After the incident, provincial leaders immediately ordered rescue work to be carried out. Changchun firefighting department, emergency medical teams, gas companies and electricity companies went to the scene immediately," the statement said.
Changchun authorities said they considered it to be a "criminal case."
After initial investigations, one man was found dead inside an apartment on the 30th floor. It appeared the man had been trapped inside, the statement said.
Another person was also injured in the blasts, the statement said. The government didn't release any further details.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion. Wanda Group, which owns the building, said it was aware of the incident but had no comment yet.
