Armed men burst into a hotel complex in Nairobi, Kenya, in a deadly attack that began Tuesday, January 15. It was the highest-profile terror attack in the East African country in years.

Kenyan security forces battled to retake control of the compound, and a standoff with the attackers continued through the night before President Uhuru Kenyatta declared the siege to be over.

Somali Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, according to SITE Intelligence Group.
