With the 1988 comedy "Big," Penny Marshall became the first woman in history to direct a movie that grossed more than $100 million.

She went on to direct other films such as "A League of Their Own," "Awakenings," "Renaissance Man" and "The Preacher's Wife."

But Marshall might be best known for her breakthrough role as Laverne DeFazio on the TV show "Laverne & Shirley," which ran from 1976-1983.

Marshall died Monday, December 17, at the age of 75.

"Penny was a girl from the Bronx, who came out West, put a cursive 'L' on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story," said Michelle Bega, a family spokeswoman. "We hope her life continues to inspire others to spend time with family, work hard and make all of their dreams come true."

Marshall's acting career began in the late 1960s. She grew up in New York and moved out to Los Angeles, where her older brother Garry had been writing for shows such as "The Lucy Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
