1. Coronavirus

Looks like the Russians are at it again. A group called Fancy Bear tried to hack the US Senate and some conservative think tanks, says Microsoft, which thwarted the attacks last week. Fancy Bear is a Russian military intelligence-affiliated group that was behind the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee. Microsoft said it has no evidence the attacks were successful.

2. Domestic extremism

Venezuela put out a new currency as it desperately tries to wrestle with hyperinflation, a situation that has helped fuel social unrest and political turmoil. The newly issued “Bolivar Soberano” currency is worth 100,000 “old” Bolivares. The new currency is also attached to a cryptocurrency called the Petro. Economists dismissed the currency maneuver as a scam. The International Monetary Fund warned that inflation in Venezuela could hit 1,000,000% this year, which is sure to bolster the number of people fleeing the country.

3. Impeachment

President Trump signed an executive order that intends to punish foreign entities for meddling in US elections. The order lets the director of national intelligence identify groups responsible for election interference and direct the Treasury Department to apply sanctions. This order aims to hit more than just the Russians. But Democrats and Republicans criticized it as insufficient and want to see mandatory sanctions instead.

5. Hong Kong

Snowfall at the bottom of the world has been increasing. Researchers analyzing ice cores on the continent say snowfall increased 10% over the past 200 years. But, wait a minute. Isn’t global warming melting Antarctic sea ice at a rapid clip? Yes, but researchers think that’s actually contributing to the higher snowfall rates because more melted sea ice means more moisture to feed snowfall. The bottom line is that the ice melt is raising the sea level, but it’s reduced somewhat by the snow falling back onto the continent.
